I bought these Maybelline eyeshadow quads with the intention to put them on with the sponge applicator. My motivation was to show that even if you’re at the beginning stages of wearing makeup you can pull off something decent. Unfortunately, that just wasn’t the case.
Amethyst Smokes and Natural Smokes just aren’t where it’s at when it comes to drugstore eyeshadow palettes. When I first swatched them I knew it was going to be a problem because it took quite a few swipes to build up the color on my arm. I pressed on anyway.
Palettes with the instructions are great for beginners because they take the guesswork out of where to put each eyeshadow. Step 1 in applying these is the base color. However, once I applied the base color I knew these palettes were officially a bust. Both base colors are way too light to maintain the color of the other shadows if applied per instructions. Now if you skip the base or use it on the browbone you might be able to pull it off, but that doesn’t really matter because this isn’t something a beginner might think about. They’re going to follow the instructions end up with something they don’t like.
Since it took several swipes to build up the product I ended up finding out how rough the sponge applicator really is. It’s rough. I eventually used eyeshadow base and it made it the colors more vibrant which is good, but bad for those light bases because it made them more vibrant as well. The white that was nearly wearable now became completely unwearable.
I’m disappointed with these to say the least. These might work better with a brush but so what. If you’re just starting out wearing makeup you should be able to use what you have. So to the beginner, avoid these quads. Other Maybelline quads and palettes might be good but these are not. There are other palettes that are more pigmented and still within a tight budget.
Amethyst Smokes and Natural Smokes Maybelline Expert Wear quads are $4.97 and available where Maybelline products are sold and online.
