Benefit Cosmetics makes one of my favorite mascaras, They’re Real! Mascara, so when I saw that Sephora.com was offering a free mini of Benefit’s They’re Real! Push-up Liner I jumped on it. The full size They’re Real! Push-up Liner is $24 and is a gel-liner comes in a pen form. It is supposed to be long wearing, smudge-proof, and easy to use.
This eyeliner’s soft AccuFlex™ tip is custom-angled to draw an easy line. Its flat, wide guard gently pushes lashes aside to get close to lash line.
So with all that said, is it true? Kinda.
When you first open the eyeliner an orange plastic piece is in the tip of the pen that must be removed before you can use the product. Once that piece is removed you have to spin a bottom piece several times for the product to come out of the tip. When product comes out you wipe off the excess and your Benefit They’re Real Push-up Liner is ready to use. Easy peasy right? Nope.
Here’s what’s true: it’s smudge proof and you can get it close to your lashline with it. The rest is open to interpretation.
I don’t have a steady hand and it’s one of the reasons I’ve steered clear of most gel and liquid liners. Since my hand shakes a bit it, made the liner a little difficult for me to use. If your hand is steadier than mine then you may not have problem with it.
Initially it was a mess. I didn’t realize that the product needed to be flush with the tip at all times. That means you must click the pen so some product comes out and then wipe the excess away so it’s flat. Before I figured that out I was unfortunately layering liner on my lid and not in a good way. I was scared it was going to flake off, but I was able to smooth it out with the tip to make it look better.
Once I figured out that I needed to keep it flush, I had to deal with the difficulty of getting a smooth application. I don’t have taut eye skin so my liner is going to skip if I attempt to line my eyes in one swipe. To deal with that, I gradually line my eyes. But that technique didn’t really work for this product. And the idea of needing to constantly click the pen and wipe away product seems tedious.
The concept is cute, but this may not be it. I think that it would be a lot easier to get some gel liner and a brush to do what this product is supposed to do. It’s unfortunate because the gel-liner is nice. It’s matte and it’s not going anywhere(to remove use waterproof remover). That’s usually what one wants in a liner. The tip is soft and flexible and that helps you get close to the lashline. But that good stuff can’t trump how ho-hum I feel about this push-up liner.
